UT Foundation Caps 25th Anniversary With Highest Fundraising Year in University of Tennessee History

Foundation surpasses $654 million in FY26, bringing decade total past $2.7 billion toward $4 billion goal

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – July 16, 2026 – The University of Tennessee Foundation, Inc. is marking a milestone 25th anniversary with its most fitting celebration yet, the single greatest fundraising year in the University of Tennessee’s 230-plus-year history.

In fiscal year 2026, donors from across the globe contributed $654,881,067 in new gifts and commitments, shattering last year’s record of $492.8 million and surpassing the half-billion-dollar mark for the first time. The achievement underscores the extraordinary momentum that has defined the UT Foundation since it was established in 2001 as the official fundraising arm of the UT System.

This year’s total reflects the collective impact across every campus and institute in the UT System: UT Knoxville ($581 million, which includes $34 million from the UT Institute of Agriculture), UT Chattanooga ($29 million), UT Health Science Center ($34 million), UT Martin ($7.9 million) and UT Southern ($830,000).

The record-breaking year also propels the Foundation past the 70% mark toward its $4 billion fundraising goal for the decade, with four years remaining. As outlined in the UT System’s strategic vision, the Foundation is now on pace to surpass $4 billion by 2030.

A Quarter-Century of Transformation

When the UT Foundation launched in 2001, the organization raised roughly $100 million a year. Twenty-five years later, the organization has grown into an over 300-person, system-wide advancement operation and fundamentally transformed what philanthropy means for the University of Tennessee.

The turning point came in 2011, when the UT Board of Trustees restructured the Foundation into an independent, strategically driven nonprofit with clear goals and performance incentives. The result has been unprecedented growth, from $100 million annually to more than $650 million, a more than sixfold increase in annual fundraising.

“Twenty-five years ago, the Foundation set out with a simple charge: build a foundation worthy of this university,” said Kerry Witcher, president and CEO of the UT Foundation. “What has happened since is nothing short of remarkable. This record reflects the passion of more than 88,000 donors, the dedication of our statewide team and a quarter-century of building trust with alumni and friends who believe deeply in the power of the University of Tennessee. We are not slowing down.”

Statewide Impact, One Unified Voice

Unlike peer universities where campuses often compete for donor support, the UT Foundation operates as one coordinated voice across the state. UT Knoxville, UT Chattanooga, UT Martin, UT Southern, the UT Health Science Center, the Institute of Agriculture and the Institute for Public Service all work together under a single advancement strategy.

That model is producing results well beyond fundraising totals. Of the UT System’s more than 471,000 active alumni worldwide, a record 336,324 are now engaged with the university through giving, volunteering, mentoring students and attending events. Alumni contributions accounted for 32% of this year’s giving total.

The dollars raised are translating directly into opportunity: thousands of scholarships, first-generation student support, faculty endowments, groundbreaking research and campus improvements statewide. The Foundation is also central to the UT System’s goal of having 65% of students graduate debt-free by 2030, up from 55% today.

“Surpassing $654 million in a single year would have been unimaginable when this foundation was created 25 years ago! We are forever thankful to the over 88,792 donors from every corner of Tennessee and around the world that believe this University is worthy of their investment,” said UT System President Randy Boyd. “Because of them, we are making college more affordable, fueling discovery and ensuring that the University of Tennessee lives up to its land grant mission of serving the people of Tennessee.”

Looking Ahead

With enrollment across the UT System on track toward a goal of 85,000 students and fundraising momentum accelerating, the UT Foundation is positioning the university for a transformational close to the decade.

The UT Foundation’s next 25 years begin with the same mission that started it all-connecting the generosity of supporters to the potential of students and faculty across Tennessee.
